    What Messi is holding there is called a Mate. It's an infusion made with hot water and a herb called Yerba Mate. It's similar to tea on paper, but it's drinked with a Bombilla (similar to a straw), served on a, well, Mate, which is that wooden container (alternatively, plastic) and you serve the whole Yerba inside and then go and serve the water.
    The taste is quite different though, as it's way stranger than your regular tea and has a taste rather herb-y. Most of the time is dranked alone but some people (including myself) tend to use sugar/sweetener, or instead of water they use juice, which makes Tereré, a variant really popular on Uruguay. In Brazil is really popular as well, having it's own name, and even countries like Paraguay and even Chile drink it too. But still, it remains as a sign of Argentina's culture 🇦🇷🧉
